English Department Information

We are a vibrant, experienced, and committed team of professionals delivering a child centred Curriculum at KS3 that develops our young girls to be articulate and confident individuals who can write creatively and convincingly and analyse how meaning is created in a range of texts. Our classes are relevant, engaging, challenging and enjoyable.

At GCSE we have repeatedly achieved over 85% A* to C in English Language and 98% A* to C in English Literature. Our results are ALWAYS above the N.I Average which reflects our commitment to excellence and attainment, our positive relationships with our pupils and our core vision to "ASPIRE, ENDEAVOUR AND ACHIEVE" in the classroom and life!

At GCE A Level, our Literature results are 100% A*-E. Our girls are challenged, stretched, and thrive in their study of Friel, Frost, Heaney, Dickinson and Shakespeare. Many of our Year 14s continue their studies in Literature at 3rd Level or go on to study, Law, Medicine, The Media, Journalism, Screen Writing and Teaching.

We have excellent links with a range of local authors, poets and organisations who visit our classrooms and connect English with the world beyond. Last year the girls participated in:

The Bloody Sunday memorial project.

The Words of Kindness project; The Lyra Mc Kee Creative Writing Project; Local Writer Workshops with Sue Divin and Julianne Campbell ; The Theatre of Witness Workshop; A Journalism Workshop at the University of Ulster • A Creative writing workshop with Felicity Mc Coll • AS lectures at Heaney’s Homeplace.
