 Wall 2 Wall Music
  

To set up an online music network in Northern Ireland border counties in conjuction with NUMU –using their secure digital platform to create a virtual hub that helps stimulate greater music engagement among young people.

 

Why music?

Not only is music a creative industry in its own right – and the one at the forefront of new internet technologies – it is an ideal medium through which young people can learn wider skills and develop positive attitudes, because its creative, engaging and fun. Wall2Wall Music facilities collaborative, independent peer to peer learning – it encourages young people to learn by doing, Also the creative aspects of music – improvisation, composition, performance or if you like brainstorming ideas, design, getting to market are central skills to the creation of new content. And new content, And new content drives new industries.

 

Why Numu ?

The hub created on the NUMU platform will connect participants and enable them to share projects within the hub and with other hubs throughout the world reflecting the global nature of the creative industries. They can also create their own record labels participate in music charts which will help stimulate entrepreneurial thinking.

 

So Wall2Wall Music is a new space for learning and participation and aims to:

 

  • Stimulate creativity and entrepreneurship among young people.
  • Develop the self esteem of young people
  • Promote the achievements of young people by connecting their work to a wider audience.
  • Widen access to creative music making, especially among young people for whom traditional music learning is not appropriate or effective.
  • Develop young musical leaders.
  • Create opportunities for young people to work alongside leading professionals musicians.
  • Develop employability skills in young people.

  The delivery of the Wall2Wall Music programme involves 4 main strands:

 

  1. The setting up of an online network in conjunction with NUMU-using technology to connect participants and share projects..
  2. The provision of in school workshops-connecting with KS3, KS4 and KS5 curriculum and enrichment priorities.
  3. The development of existing Extended Schools model to facilitate road shows and summer schemes.
  4. The provision of training for local facilitators.

  This project then has the potential to develop further at KS5 by:

 

 

  • Creating a pool of facilitators and mentors drawn from local, national and international professionals who can help deliver new BTEC Performing Arts modules at KS5.
  • Increasing the training and personal development of music teachers in schools.
  • Developing a University ‘Step Up’ programme for Performing Arts with the University of Ulster,
  • Developing Industry Placements and career support.

 

Context:

Wall2Wall Music is currently being developed by a creative cluster involving Music55-7 , St Cecilia’s College (Specialist performing arts status), the University of Ulster and Seagate.

 

Timeframe:

Set up March-August 2008 for delivery in academic year 2008/2009 Develop further progression at KS5 from Sept 2009-2011.
